What It Means to Be A Black Man in the Obama Age

The reach and the power of this moment is, at times, overwhelming and hard to grasp. Part of what comes into play is this so-called new question: "What Does It Mean To Be A Black Man in America Today?" The thinking of this has clearly changed.

I would like to re-introduce the POB! Family to a dynamic new website that explores that very question. The Masculinity Project (www.masculinityproject.org) is a interactive website and community outreach initiative (launched November 2008) that is your one-stop online destination to delve into this arena. At www.masculinityproject.org, you will find opportunities to chat about this topic, share your ideas, upload your own video, and watch short film documentaries (mostly 10-minute docs) by some of the top filmmakers in the country. In the coming weeks, educators will also be able to download curricula for student learning projects.

Like most of us, I'm celebrating the excitement of the moment , yet I'm real sober about the work that needs to be done to bring real justice and equality in this country. The recent killings of Oscar Grant and Adolph Grimes reminds us that living as a Black man in this country is still filled with peril and prejudice.

All the best,
